I don't have much of a platform yet because it's
hard to tell what the issues will be. But, here's some things I'm
sure of. No, I take it back, I'm not sure of some of them. I'm sure I'm a
bit naive about some of the economics details and the military, but my
inflated common sense says the following things.
-
Education is the root of much good, and lack of education is what I blame
for many evils. Most people who claim they need special dispensation
because they are somehow disadvantaged probably need more education.
-
Health Care should be something everyone gets and noone worries about.
Some things work better when we all go in on it together, and Health care looks like it's one of those.
We would have more cost effective, more efficient, and for 90+% of the people better care under a Universal Health Care plan.
One consequence of this may be that we need to put government research
laboratories to work making medicine more cost effective. Research on
drug production methods and surgical procedures most likely.
-
Space Exploration is really neat and we should do more of it.
Justification: Exploration for its own sake, valued intrinsically. Spin offs.
-
The Military is way too big. One quarter of all federal taxes go to it.
If you wonder where the money for any proposed program is going to come from,
this is the answer.
-
The Tax structure is not fair.
We need to re-balance the combination of income tax, property tax and sales tax.
Within those, especiallly income tax, we need to make sure that who pays how much is fair.
Currently the people on the low end are getting squeezed too much.
-
The Budget should be balanced (Duh). We should reduce spending to
do it while keeping taxes unchanged. Taxes cannot be reduced until
the first problem is fixed (Duh).
- The debt must go. Paying interest is stupid. For further justification see
The Motley Fool.
-
Issue no more bonds. Bonds are dumb. We have enough money flowing in we shouldn't need
to borrow ahead for anything. Bonds wind up to be just a way of giving
money to people who allready have enough.
- Guns are obsolete. Aside from hunting they have no use. Self defense
can be accomplished with non-leathal weapons like those that have recently
been developed and put into use by police forces around the country. I would
fully support firearm-free metropolitan areas.
- The electoral college has got to go. The current election system has
locked us in to a corrupt pattern where only two 'choices' will ever be
offered to the people. We need a direct election with a
better voting system.
Either ranked voting or acceptance voting.
- Nationally accepted and available 'civil union' or 'personal incorporation' of any shape to fill the role traditionally played by marriage.
- Zero Population Growth. I am in favor of social programs that will encourage
the responsible behavior in child bearing. I believe the best way is for all
women to have two or fewer children. I ask that people do this of their own
free will without bonus or penalties provided. I want to remove tax incentives
beyond 2 children. We shouldn't pay anyone to have more. This could be taken
sightly further by decreasing the tax credit for a second child.
Overpopulation in the US isn't severe enough to push beyond that I think.
This is a delicate
issue and I don't want penalties to stray into dystopian nightmaires.
Needs more thought, suggestions welcome.
-
Decriminalization of drug use. Addiction is a medical problem with medical solutions. Substances with acceptable consequences should be legal, regulated for safety and taxed. (alcohol, nicotine, THC, etc) Distributing drugs should be punishable by laws akin to prescription drug violations.
- English as
a national language is a good idea. I think it would smooth integration of
foreign cultures if they could communicate more easily with the people already
here. One of those 'open a dialogue' kind of radical thoughts.
- Religion and Politics.
If you want to talk Theology and find out what I believe to know more about who I am, fine, let's talk Theology. But if you want to find out how my beliefs are going to affect my policy as an elected official then I say that I believe in the separation of church and state and that we should do our best to neither establish nor interfere with the practice of religion. As far as I am able I will do what is in the best interest of all people of all beliefs.
Geek version
- Education *= 2;
- foreach citizen in *; healthcare++;
- NASA++;
- Military *= /*.5*/ .75;
- deficit = 0; /*surplus preferrable, work on that later */
- const int payofftime = 7;/* a guess at the magic number of years */
double payoffrate = debt / payofftime;
for ( int year = now; year < payofftime; year++ )
debt -= payoffrate; /* see

- kill -9 bonds
- guns--;
- delete electionSystem.presidential;
electionSystem.presidential = new DirectRankedVotingSystem();
- Union( Person[] );
- /* FIXME implement feedback limiting to controll population and move it
toward an optimal size */
